Computer WorkstationA computer workstation, commonly referred to as workstation, is a high-end desktop or desk-side microcomputer that is specifically designed for technical applications. Usually workstations offer higher performance than normal personal computers and particularly have better graphics, increased processing power, higher memory capacity, and more optimum multitasking ability. Some workstations are specifically designed and developed for display and manipulation of complex data like 3D-engineering simulation results, mathematical plots and mechanical design. Some of the specific types of workstations are UNIX workstations, RISC workstations, engineering workstations, graphic workstations, etc. Usually computer workstations have been at the forefront of the computer market and are almost always the first to offer advanced accessories and collaboration tools, as amply exemplified by videoconferencing capability, first introduced in workstations. Most computer workstations constitute a high resolution display, a keyboard and a mouse at a minimum (though for advanced design and visualization tasks specialised input devices like graphics tablets or SpaceBalls are used), but more often than not come with multiple displays and usually utilize a server level processor. With the increase in the computing power of general-purpose PCs, many complex tasks no longer need high-end computer workstations, with the workstation market becoming increasingly specialised. Used and repaired office and home computer workstations, and their associated furniture, is available for sale on many online shopping portals. |
