Core 2 DuoThe Intel Core 2 Duo range of high performance processors was launched on July 27, 2006. The Core 2 Duo series features 64-bit mobile and desktop x86-architecture microprocessors featuring the Intel Core microarchitecture. The Core 2 Duo series was introduced to phase out the ageing Pentium 4 and Pentium D brand that used the older, inefficient NetBurst architecture. The series comprised Duo (dual-core), Quad (quad-core), and Extreme (dual- or quad-core) CPUs that sported higher speeds as well as unlocked multiplier variants. Initially, the first Core 2 Duo processors were fabricated on 300 mm wafers using a 65 nm manufacturing process. The radically new Core architecture is an improvement over the earlier Intel processor series and emphasises on efficient use of CPU clock cycles rather than high clock speeds. The entire range of processors is highly energy efficient (with reduced power consumption) and also maintains much cooler temperature levels. The processor series features numerous technological improvements and performance enhancements like the Intel 64 (also known as EM64T), Virtualization Technology (except T5500 or lower end E4x00), Execute Disable Bit, and SSE3. Certain next generation improvements and variants also feature a revised version of SSE3 tagged as SSSE3 (an additional "S"), Trusted Execution Technology, Enhanced SpeedStep, and Active Management Technology (iAMT2). Core 2 processors available on popular online stores include the Core 2 Duo E4000/E6000/ E6600, Core 2 Quad Q6600, Core 2 Extreme QX6800, QX6700 and QX6800 CPUs. |
