DesktopDesktop is a personal computer or PC that is specifically designed for use on a desk or table. These are mostly compact in size, and are useful in home or office situations. Portable computers like PDAs or laptops are not included in this definition. Also known as microcomputers, desktop computers are also preferred by schools and institutions. Desktop computers are available in a variety of form factors ranging from small form factors to huge vertical tower models. First produced in the late 1970s, Desktop computers have become an integral part of peoples’ lives in the United Kingdom. The two basic elements of the desktop PC are the hardware and software components. The hardware components include the motherboard, the hard disk, RAM chips, the processor, graphics card, sound card, etc. The software includes the main operating system and the numerous applications that run on it like desktop publishing. Workstations, special communication computers and internet servers are also referred to as desktops. One can do his office work, edit videos, access the internet, organize digital photos and play music with the aid of a desktop PC. Nowadays, desktop PCs are offered with several multimedia features so that one can enjoy full-length movies with good audio quality. The routine office tasks you can perform with a desktop include preparing text documents and spreadsheets, maintaining databases, sending and receiving business emails, etc. Households use desktops for making their family budgets or playing games. Gamers can enjoy playing games like Doom and Half-life on them. |
