DesktopsDesktops or desktop computers are basically computers that were designed to fit on existing workstation tables of users, unlike mainframes and mid-range computers that took an entire room or floors for simple computation sequences. These were first produced between the late 1970s and 1990s. Desktops are also known as microcomputers and are different from portable computers like laptops or PDAs. The four kinds of desktops computers are home computers or personal computers; internet servers, workstations and special communications computers. They are basically used for performing tasks like video editing, organizing digital photos and internet access as well as simpler office productivity tasks. Most desktop computers comprise components that can be easily replaced or upgraded. Desktops PCs that combine the display monitor into the same case as the CPU are also known as all-in-one computers. These kinds of desktops desktop save considerable desk space, but feature restricted hardware expansion capabilities. The various components of a desktop computer comprises motherboard, processor, RAM, graphics card, sound card, CPU heatsink and cooler fan, hard disc drive (HDD), optical disc drive (ODD), floppy disc drive (FDD) physics card, speakers, modem, network card and PSU. The various ports in it include USB, Ethernet, headphone jack, card reader and FireWire among numerous others. Currently, desktops refers to an area of the screen that displays the graphical user interface where icons and windows appears. |
