External Hard Drive

Hard disk drives are storage devices that allow computer data to be read and written digitally on a magnetic disk. All computers need hard drives to store the operating system as well as the other programs and information required to run various applications. The uses of hard drives have expanded beyond computers to include devices such as audio players, digital cameras, video cameras and personal digital devices.

External drives are generally used to take backup copies of the data stored in the internal drives. They are housed outside the main computer with its own protective enclosure. External drives are connected to the computer through a high-speed data cable such as the standard FireWire and USB. These drives are a great means of storing and keeping financial information and other sensitive documents secure, especially when a computer has multiple users.
