LaptopsLaptops are a compact version of Desktop PCs. As the name suggests, this handy device can be placed on the personís lap, thus, making it handy to use anywhere. Since, they look like a notebook these are also known as notebook computers. This lightweight gadget varies in size, weighs around 10 ñ 15 pounds and is more popular amongst frequent travellers and office goers. The keyboard, mouse, monitor and the CPU is incorporated in the notebook itself. However, one can also attach external devices via ports. The monitor is a flat screen LCD and typically measures approximately 12". This machine can work either on a direct power from electrical points or on rechargeable batteries. Additionally, laptops consume lesser power than a full-fledge desktop PCs. Also, they make less noise than a conventional computer. However, in case of operating systems, desktop and laptop PCs are same. The main components of a laptop include the motherboard, the processor, the heat sink and the graphic card. The data is stored on comparatively smaller memory modules. The type of memory modules used in a laptop include SODIMM, DDR SDRAM, SDRAM and other proprietary variants. Some of the features included in most of the laptops are an ODD that reads/ burns a CD, floppy drive, slots for external devices and inbuilt speakers and web-cam. A Whitebook is a customised laptop that has specifications as per the userís requirement. |
