DeccaDecca Records is one of the leading British record companies, founded in 1929. The origin of the "Decca" name can be traced back to a portable gramophone called the "Decca Dulcephone". Decca Records was later renamed as the Decca Gramophone Co. Ltd. by Edward Lewis in 1929. Over the years, the company became the second largest record label in the world, calling itself "The Supreme Record Company". In 1932, Decca took over the bankrupt UK branch of Brunswick Records, followed by Melotone and Edison Bell record companies. By 1939, it was the only record company in UK apart from EMI. Post the second World War, the Company made a significant contribution in the improvisation of phonographic recording. It produced the full frequency range recording that soon became internationally famous. The company introduced magnetic recording and also the first long-playing (LP) record. By the 1950’s, it gradually ventured into sound reproduction on recording discs, influencing music lovers all over. Currently, the Decca music label brand is a leading name in both classical music and Broadway scores. Some of the latest hits from the label includes Wicked (2003), and Courage by Paula Cole. Some of the popular products from the company include Decca record players and Decca DVD players. |
