ElectrostaticElectrostatics is a science that deals with the energy generated from static electric charges. Electrostatics finds applications in varied fields and many products work on its principles, one of which is the electrostatic loudspeaker. This speaker incorporates two electrically conductive panels enveloping a non-conductive sheet treated with conductive materials such as graphite. A narrow air gap exists between the layers. The basic theory of this speaker revolves around the maintenance of a constant charge rather than constant voltage. Electrostatics is also seen in electrostatic printers. These printers generate the printout on a charged paper. The ink and toner are designed to stick to the charged portion of the paper. This technology is mostly used in large image plotters. Another application of electrostatics is the removal of hair lice, an affliction commonly suffered by many. Electrostatic combs are battery operated and when drawn through the hair, helps to instantaneously zap the lice. Electrostatic powder coating systems are used to render a surface with an even power coating. The powder is electrically charged in a specially designed gun and then sprayed onto the surface. This method is better than wet spraying as it is less messy and any excess powder can be easily cleaned off. Electrostatic air filters are also very effective and popular. |
