FreeviewFreeview is a digital television signal transmission service through which viewers across the UK are able to view around 30 free television channels, along with certain radio stations. The incorporated interactive element makes this service more user-friendly. Without any contract, the user has to avail of just a one-time payment for the installation. The signals can be accessed through the normal television aerial. This service was initiated on the 30th of October 2002 at 6 am and since then has used mostly terrestrial transmitters compatible with the DVB-T standard. In order to view the Freeview transmission, the television needs to either have an integrated digital tuner or a set-top box being connected to the television. Freeview compatible computer tuning cards are also available to allow viewing of the channels on a computer. The British Government’s decisions to cut down on analogue transmission will actually increase the Freeview coverage as well as the signal power. The entire offering from Freeview can be categorized into seven channels: Entertainment, Children’s, Interactive, Lifestyle, Music, News and Radio. The company also markets digital boxes, digital TV recorders and digital TV’s. Some Freeview boxes like Netgem also offer Internet access, with facilities like e-mailing, SMS and web surfing. The credibility of Freeview can be garnered from the fact that the company falls within the umbrella of DTV Services Ltd., an organization whose shareholders include BBC, ITV, Channel 4, BSkyB and National Grid Wireless. |
