GarminFounded by David Casey, Gary Burrell and Paul Shumaker in 1989, Garmin Ltd is a group of companies involved in the development of aviation and consumer products, which are related to the Global Positioning System. This is a set up of satellites, receivers and computers, which help locate the longitude and latitude of any place. This company has it's headquarters in Olathe, Kansas, in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The GPS 100, a GPS receiver, was the first product introduced by Garmin in the market. It was a dash-mounted receiver targeted towards marine users. This company set up production facilities in Taipei before the introduction of a hand-held GPS receiver, which was widely used in the 1991 Gulf War. Personal GPS devices known as the Forerunner were released in the early 2000s which were targeted towards recreational runners. During this time they also introduced their well-known StreetPilot series that were designed as navigational assistance within the car. Garmin also released the iQue line in the year 2003, which consisted of integrated PDA-GPS receivers. Their iQue M4 was the path-breaking PDA, which does not need a computer for preloading maps. The Garmin StreetPilot i-Series was introduced in 2005, which included the i2, i3 and i5 models. These products were GPS navigators of compact design. Garmin GPS products inclusive of the Garmin Nuvi are much sought after in the UK. |
