CottonCotton is a soft, white fibrous material extracted from the plants of the genus Gossypium. These plants are found in tropical and subtropical regions all over the world. This material was first used in ancient times in places like Mexico and Egypt. This fibre was sold by several cotton traders in different European countries during the Middle Ages. Cotton weaving became an important occupation all across the globe ever since. After the Industrial revolution, the cotton industry expanded manifold and became a significant influence on our lives. Nowadays, cotton is used in several textile products like bath towels, T-shirts, bath robes, bed sheets, cotton hammocks, socks, etc. The cotton fibre is woven to produce natural fibre clothing. A particular type of cotton, known as terrycloth, is widely used in the textile industry for making denim, corduroy, cotton twill and chambray. Cotton is also used in the manufacture of tents, fishnets and bookbinding. Cotton is also combined with several other materials like polyester, rayon and other synthetic fibres to make clothes and accessories. Known for its strength, durability and absorbency, cotton is preferred by significant fashion designers like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Cotton clothes are also preferred as they are comfortable to wear in different weather conditions. Various crafters use cotton in their craftwork for decorative purposes. |
