FeathersFeathers characteristically distinguish birds from other living groups on this planet. Feathers grow on the epidermis of birds, covering them in beautiful colours and patterns. This arrangement of feathers, also known as plumage, adds to the beauty of birds. Feathers, which form as a result of controlled proliferation of cells in the epidermis, are of 2 basic types: vaned feathers and down feathers. Vaned feathers cover the exterior of the bird’s body, with the down feathers lying beneath them. A rich diversity of birds worldwide has resulted in the availability of feathers in different sizes, colours and designs. Feathers have attracted humans for ages primarily because of their utilitarian uses. Being soft and good at trapping heat, feathers are often used in beddings like pillows, blankets and mattresses. Quilted coats and sleeping bags use feathers as fillings. In the past, feathers were used for stabilising arrows. Bird feathers were also used for ink pens. Infact, bird feathers have long been used as beauty adornments. Colourful feathers have been used to decorate hats and fishing lures. Feathers were also worn as head dresses by women and as head gears by men. Feathers have been used for cultural and religious purposes throughout. For instance, eagle feathers and peacock feathers are considered auspicious by many. Peacock feathers are extensively used as decorative body embellishments. Marabou feathers, Ostrich feathers and Chandelle feathers are equally popular. Feather hat pins and feather boas are popular fashion accessories. These feather accessories are available online and in fashion stores. |
