Spinning

Spinning refers to a process of making yarn or thread. This process involves usage of different types of raw fibre materials to make yarn. Earlier, spinning was done performed by handsmanually by, twisting the raw fibres between the hands. Even today, some spinners continue to spin the materials using their own hands as it enables allows them to keep a tab on the specific yarn qualities. One can also create yarn that is not commercially and easily available by spinning fibre with hands. Apart from the hand techniques, spindle and spinning wheel were introduced to make yarn. Some of the latest spinning machines are powered by electricity, which has made the spinning process much faster and highly efficient.

The quality of the yarn spun depends on the type and quantity of material, fibre length and the amount of twist to the material. Generally, in the spinning process, the raw fibres are twisted together to make durable and stronger threads. Some of the methods of spinning include twist and ply and handspinning wool. Different materials used to make yarn include plant fibres, animal fibres, manufactured fibres and even mineral fibres. Manufactured fibres like nylon, rayon, polyester and tencel are quite popularly used. Yarn spinning is a popular activity among craft lovers who continue to create new spinning techniques like coiling. Innovative applications like dyeing before beginning of spinning and adding different materials have been introduced lately. Many people take up spinning as a hobby.
