Air ConditioningThe term air conditioning is generally used to refer to any appliance, system, or mechanism that is designed to cool an area using a refrigeration cycle. In the broadest sense, air conditioning implies any form of cooling, heating, ventilation or disinfection that modifies the condition of the air, usually for temperature or humidity. An air conditioning unit is the device that is used to condition the air, and is also known as air conditioner or aircon. An air conditioner’s purpose in the home and in the car is to provide cooling by means of a refrigeration cycle. Usually air conditioners reduce the humidity content of the air, and as such they are ideal in high-humidity environments. Also there are some air conditioners that only dry the air and not cool it, and these are sought after mainly for economical reasons. There are two types of fixed installation air conditioners used in houses today, split and window. A split air conditioner consists of an indoor unit that is connected to an outdoor unit using flexible pipes. A window air conditioner is the most common single room air conditioning unit, and is typically placed in a window. Currently the most common cooling agent used in air conditioners is R-22, which is being phased out by the more environmentally friendly R-410A. A portable air conditioning unit is an air conditioner on wheels and as such can be easily transported inside a home or office. There are two types of portable air conditioners, split and hose. Some of the major air conditioner manufacturers are Daikin, Mitsubishi, carrier and Haier. |
