Canvas Pictures

Canvas is a heavy-duty thick fabric material, made from cotton with twill weaving, that is used in manufacturing of sails, tents, marquees, backpacks and other products which go through a lot of wear and tear. These properties are typical of canvas and separate it from other heavy-duty cotton materials. Canvas is used for making canvas pictures. Canvas pictures replaced the traditionally used wooden board, and became one of the most popular supports for oil painting. The oldest painting surviving on canvas dates back to 1410, proving it to be an extremely durable and reliable medium for painting. However, the canvas panel gained its popularity in 16th and 17th century.

Initially canvas was made from linen, which was considered durable for oil paintings. Although the cotton canvas has replaced the linen one for most artists, the linen canvas still retains it's popularity among professional artists. A canvas board is a ready to use painting surface with canvas that is fixed and glued on the board. However, these are available in limited sizes and are used mostly by amateur painters. As the painting on the canvas pictures becomes older, it requires maintenance. There are lots of products available in the market which enables the owner to maintain their price possession with ease. Sometimes, even the photographs are reworked and printed on canvas. This is specifically done to make it durable and also gives it an aesthetic appeal.
