About Granite

Granite is so called because of its granular, coarse-grained structure. An igneous rock, granite is formed from solidified magma, which flowed in a liquid state as lava from volcanic activity before cooling. Granite is composed mainly of feldspar, mica and quartz. Porphyritic granite contains very large crystals of its component minerals. Granite ranges from pink to dark grey or black in colour, depending on its mineralogy. Granite was used in the construction of the Pyramids around 2,600BC, and in the Rajaraja Chola temple in southern India built about 1100AD. A very hard stone, granite is difficult to carve by hand, but the nineteenth century use of steam-powered cutting and dressing tools simplified the process. In Aberdeen, the 'granite city', Alexander MacDonald's works produced the first polished granite tombstone in 1832, and it became a status symbol in Victorian society to have one erected. Granite is used extensively in building construction and flooring. Granite cobble setts or cobbles are found throughout the world. In homes, polished granite is used for kitchen worktops, trivets and cutting boards, as well as wall tiling and bathroom flooring, due to its aesthetic appeal and durability. 'Star Galaxy' granite is a highly polished, deep black granite with bronze and gold flecks, and is very popular in flooring tiles and island kitchen worktops. Granite is used in gardens for seating and for tabletops, as well as in water features. In sport, curling stones have been traditionally made since the 1750s from granite quarried in Ailsa Craig, a small island in the Firth of Clyde. Granite is a popular rock climbing surface globally, and artificial 'granite' surfaces are often found in indoor climbing walls.
