About Mower

In 1827 an engineer called Edwin Budding felt that there had to be a more efficient means of cutting grass than the labour intensive scythe which was then prevalent. He built the first lawn mower, a device with blades set into a cylinder rotating on a horizontal axis, and received a patent in 1830. He envisaged his creation being used primarily on sports grounds and larger gardens. Towards the close of the 19th century a steam powered mower was produced, but it wasn't until 1902 that the first petrol fuelled internal combustion engine model was built. Rotary mowers didn't come along until engines could be made small, yet powerful enough to drive the blades at grass lopping speeds. Types of mowers Today the range and variety of garden lawn mowers is huge, to suit every garden type and lifestyle choice. Push mowers without motors are useful for small areas of grass and in places that are awkward to get to. These are also favoured by environmental enthusiasts as there is no energy consumption or pollution. Corded electric mowers are handy for larger gardens but are limited by the length of the cord, which can become tangled if there are lots of plants and trees to manoeuvre around. Cordless electric mowers are increasingly popular. These are powered by a set of rechargeable batteries, the length of the available charge generally being defined by the number of batteries. Petrol mowers remain firm favourites for those with larger lawns and are available in self propelled versions. For lightness the hover mower, which floats over the grass on a cushion of air, cannot be bettered. For really large grassed areas the ride on mower is probably the best option. Robotic mowers, which can simply be left to do the job without human interference, are becoming increasingly more sophisticated.
