SetteeThe living room, sometimes referred to as the sitting room, often includes such furniture items as settees, sofas, tables, etc. Designed to provide comfortable seating for more than a single person, settees feature back and arm rests. They can accommodate persons in a sitting or reclining posture. The term ’settee’ is often used synonymously with the word ’sofa.’ These long seats often come in attractive upholstery that suit the room dÈcor. Settees are essential pieces of home furniture but, nowadays, they are popularly used for furnishing offices, hotels, etc. The earliest settees in Europe can be traced back to the seventeenth century. These early pieces came with collapsible sides that enabled their conversion to normal beds for sleeping. There have been several variations of armrests and backrests introduced in the styling of settees through the years. There are often seat cushions provided with the settees to provide enhanced sitting comfort. Settees are made in a variety of materials, patterns, styles, and colours. There are elegant wood settees in traditional or contemporary designs, besides leather settees. Bed settees are still quite popular in modern British homes. Settee covers can be separately purchased to protect these furniture pieces from dust, spillage, sunlight, etc. |
