AlexandriteAlexandrite is a gemstone embedded in different types of jewelleries such as necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants, etc. The Alexandrite stone is often known as Chrysoberyl as it belongs to that family. However, it differs from other Chrysoberyl in the sense that it contains iron, titanium and chromium as major impurities. This one is considered to be a relatively young gemstone. It is obviously named after Russian tsar Alexander II. It is the third hardest (8.5) gemstone with uncut facets. Besides golden colour, it is also found in reddish, brownish, yellow or in shades of green colour. This stone has a magical ability to change its colour from green or bluish-green in day light to soft shades of red or purplish-red in incandescent light. A blue alexandrite is a rare stone. The price of an alexandrite is charged as per the carats and colour that it displays. Top green or red is a most highly-priced stone. If the alexandrite is above one carat it becomes one of the most expensive gemstones available on earth. Due to its chemical composition and unique optical characteristic, the stone is rarely found and is extremely expensive. Today, this stone is not only found in Russia, but also in Brazil, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Its popularity is due to no complications of astronomy involved with this stone. |
