Pocket Watches

A pocket watch is a personal timepiece that does not have straps, and that is designed to be carried in a pocket. Pocket watches generally have analogue displays, and more often than not feature a hinged cover that protects the face of the watch. Most pocket watches feature a chain that allows the watch-wearer to secure the watch to a waistcoat, lapel, or belt loop. Watches with hinged covers are known as hunter cased watches, while those without hinged covers are known as an open faced watch. The hinged case not only serves the purpose of protecting the face of the watch, it also acts as a light collector that illuminates the dial in low-light conditions. The stem (the pendant to which the chain is attached) of the hunter cased watch is mostly placed at the 3 oí clock position. Pocket watches are not as popular as wrist watches, but are continued to be widely used in the railways.
