BluetoothBluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless communication. This technology helps in connecting and exchanging information between devices like mobile phones, PCs, laptops, printers, digital cameras and video game consoles. Bluetooth specifications were developed by Sven Mattisson and Jaap Haartsen while working for the Ericsson Mobile Platforms. The specifications were formalized by the Bluetooth special Interest Group (SIG). The SIG develops and licenses all the Bluetooth specifications and today has over 7000 companies listed worldwide. Bluetooth is also referred to as IEEE 802.15.1. Bluetooth devices are very popular due to their low power consumption and ease of use within a short range. Bluetooth communication takes over a secure short range radio frequency which is globally unlicensed. For Bluetooth communication to take place between 2 devices, both the devices should be Bluetooth compatible and in close proximity with each other. The given range of a Bluetooth device is power class dependent (1 metre, 10 metres, 100 metres) based on the transreceiver microchips used in them. Nowadays, mobile phones featuring hands-free Bluetooth headset, Bluetooth car kit and Bluetooth GPS receivers are easily available. In PCs Wireless communication is possible via Bluetooth keyboard, Bluetooth mouse and Bluetooth printer. All Bluetooth devices are easy to set up and use. |
