Sony EricsonGlobal communications leader, Ericsson, joined hands with another biggie from the world of consumer electronics and audio/visual entertainment, Sony Corporation, in year 2001. The Swedish telecommunications company proposed the Japanese giant of initiating a joint venture to develop and manufacture mobile phones for the exponentially growing consumer base. The joint venture between the companies has promulgated the fact that neither manufacture mobile phones bearing their respective brand names. The merger provided the companies with the power to combine Sony's expertise in consumer electronics with the technological leadership of Ericsson. The company is based in Hammersmith, London, with research & development teams in Sweden, Japan, China, Canada, the Netherlands, the United States, India and the United Kingdom. March 2002 saw the grand launch of the first Sony Ericsson mobile phone products and several other related accessories. The company further forayed into providing with tech-savvy consumers with the high performance mobile phones that also double up as personal stereo music players. Branded as the W Series, the Sony Ericsson Walkman-branded mobile phones featured high performance, audio processing components and circuitry. These phones boosted up the flaming market for music-centric mobile phones that doubled as portable music players. Grown widely popular among the masses ñ young and old ñ Sony Ericsson later on introduced the CyberShot-branded line of phones, in early 2006. Many popular Sony Ericsson brands include the Sony Ericsson K800, the Sony Ericsson W850, the Sony Ericsson K750i and the highly anticipated SonyEricsson W950i. |
