About Abba

ABBA ñ a four-member band from Sweden were the first pop music group from Europe to enjoy a decade of success across the world from 1972. While Dancing Queen was their only number one on the US charts, their music was a rage across the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. ABBA is an acronym from the first letters of each group member’s name: Agnetha, Bjˆrn, Benny and Anni-Frid (Frida), and yet it wasn’t that simple. Manager Stig Anderson was tired of writing four names and even held a competition in the newspaper to get a name! In 1973, Stig started to refer to the group as ABBA, also a famous fish-canning company in Sweden. The fish canners did not mind lending their name to the group and in 1976 the first ’B’ in the logo was reversed and became the group’s registered trademark. Abba was also known for their colourful costumes (a cult following in the 1970s fashion) and music videos. All Abba videos were directed by Lasse Hallstrˆm, who also directed a film, Abba ñ The Movie. Till date ABBA tribute bands flourish. ABBA Gold is perhaps their definitive album (songs include Dancing Queen, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Take a Chance on Me, Mamma Mia, Super Trooper, Lay All Your Love On, I Have A Dream). Other famous numbers were People Need Love (their first single together) Money, Money, Money, and Waterloo. But Take a Chance on Me actually remains the group’s biggest American hit.
