Bass SpeakerA bass speaker, also sometimes called a woofer, is a component of a speaker set that is responsible for the emission of low frequency sounds that vary from around 30 Hertz to a little more that 1 kilohertz. Bass speakers incorporate a cone connected to an electrical coil surrounded by a magnetic field. The sound is produced when the audio signal reaches the coil causing it to move forwards and backwards resulting in the shifting of the cone. The entire apparatus of the bass speaker is enclosed in a cabinet. In order to get the best results from such speakers, the cabinet/box is usually made of wood as this material tends to offer the best resonance when the cones are vibrating. For better efficiency, the cone should be made of a lightweight, but strong, material. It is usually made of polypropylene and other polymers as these compounds tend to be durable and at the same time resistant to extreme heat, cold and dampness. One of the main considerations in the design of bass speakers is the power rating. This is the maximum power the woofer can handle without crashing, causing coil overheating, or resulting in sound distortion. Bass speakers are used in both outdoor and indoor settings, in guitar and keyboard amplifiers, as well as in vehicles. Bass speakers are responsible for the foot-tapping ’boom’ that is part of many rock and metal songs. |
