Cello

The violoncello, or cello, as it is popularly known, is a bowed stringed musical instrument. It more or less has the appearance of a violin; however, it is slightly bigger with comparatively longer strings than the other instruments. Owing to its long strings, it produces a much deeper and richer sound. The cello is a popular instrument as it can produce sound in a broad range, from the some of the lowest to the highest notes.

This instrument consists of four strings made of animal gut, nylon, or steel that are stretched and fastened along the length of the instrument. The unique part about this instrument is that it is made with different pieces of wood, which are always glued together, but never nailed. It is generally kept on a spike that sticks into the floor and is held between the player’s knees. The instrument is played with a bow.

The cello is usually used as a solo instrument in chamber music or as part of the string section of an orchestra. It is even used in pop and rock music. Cello music is more closely associated with European classical music. Numerous concertos and sonatas have been written for it.
