About Fender Jazz Bass

History The Fender Jazz bass is one of a very short list of truly iconic bass guitars. First produced in 1960 by Leo Fender, it originally came with a volume and tone control for each of the two pick-ups, but was soon altered to the now customary two volume and a single master tone control. Over the years there have been many variations, including metal pick-up and bridge covers, and even a small superfluous handle below the strings, however, the basic shape and design has remained true to the original for over fifty years. Construction The body is usually a single block of ash or alder, although Japanese and Mexican models sometimes use lesser woods. The maple bolt-on neck has a 34' scale, and 20 frets (in the fretted versions) that is noticeably narrower than that of the Fender Precision. Fret boards are sculpted from maple, rosewood or ebony, or occasionally pao ferro, depending on the model and the colour required, and there is usually a plastic scratch plate on which the electrics are mounted. The pick ups in general will be a pair of four pole humbuckers, so called because they are constructed with opposing phase and polarity to cancel out circuitry hum. Sound The double pick-ups of the Jazz Bass are configured to emphasise the high end, the bridge and neck pick ups producing most of the treble and bass ends, respectively. Adjustment of the tone and volume controls provide the ability to select from an amazingly broad tone spectrum, which means the Jazz Bass lends itself superbly to all genres of music and all playing styles. Today Currently the Jazz Bass is manufactured in many different specifications offering an array of colours, finishes and hardware. There are several limited edition and a few virtuoso endorsed 'signature' models, with a variety of fretless, left-handed, five string and 'road worn' models.
