Gibson SgThe Gibson SG is a popular electric guitar model which was first launched in the 1960s. It was created as a result of the low sales of the Les Paul series. The new SG was an instant success but the inventor, Les Paul, didn’t approve of its new design. Hence its name was changed to the Gibson SG, ’SG’ being short for ’Solid Guitar’. In 1961, Les Paul’s name was officially removed, but the sales of SG guitars with the Les Paul nameplates were still sold till 1963. The Gibson SG standard guitar comes with the basic twin humbuckers, tone and volume knobs and a 3-way selector switch. It has a low, thin body and is lighter as compared to the Les Paul. The neck is also shallow, although it changes with time and with each newly introduced model. The mahogany body is not curved and does not have a maple top as the Les Paul. Besides, the Gibson SG guitar is a double cutaway guitar while the Les Paul is a single cutaway guitar. There are quite a few SG models under this series the most popular being the SG-R1 and the SG special. The Gibson SG-R1 has a mahogany body polished in black and is equipped with transparent treble and bass knobs and a switch that enables active boost on the treble pickup. The Gibson SG special has two p-90 pickups and comes with the optional whammy bar. However, it is designed without the stylized neck and mother-of-pearl fretboard surface. |
