JEMIbanez JEM is an electric guitar series, which debuted in 1987. These guitars gained popularity with the associated designer and user, Steve Vai. As of 2006, five models of JEM were available - JEM7, JEM77, JEM777, JEM555 and the Universe as well as a limited edition of signature guitars. A clear influence of Fender Stratocaster, the superstrat, Ibanez RG and Steve's older guitars can be seen in the design and specifications of the JEM guitar series. When Ibanez decided to create the JEM series of guitars and promote it as Steve Vai’s guitar, the biggest challenge was to convince Steve to play this guitar. They realised that Steve adopted "Chinese menu approach" i.e. combining the best specifications of various guitars available in the market. So they did the same. The first guitar was created and presented to Steve. He at once dismantled the piece and satisfied himself about the craftsmanship of the guitar. The company subsequently manufactured 10 similar pieces for Steve. Thus, the manufacturing of Ibanez JEM guitars began. The naming convention also came from Steve himself. The general trend of the 7th song being a guitar ballad was observed in Steve’ CDs. He had a special liking toward the number 7. Therefore, the sub-brands, during that time, were created with labels 7, 77, 777 and 555. The universe is a seven string model of JEM. This sub-series is influenced by older models: UV7PWH, UV7BK, UV77MC and UV777GR of the JEM range. |
