300mmThe distance between the centre of the lens and the film, the focal length, ensures the object is accurately focused even when it is located at any infinite point. It is measured in millimetres e.g. 300mm and is marked on the camera mount along with the largest aperture for photographer’s convenience. A focal length of any given camera decides its category into normal, telephoto, and wide angle. It is essential in photography as it establishes field of view of the camera, which is indirectly proportionate to the focal length. A normal lens that is compatible with 35mm film with the focal length of 50mm, gives a field of view that is almost equivalent to that of a normal vision. A telephoto lens is available in a wide range of focal length: 60mm to 1000mm. A telephoto lens aids in magnifying the subject, albeit it narrows the field of vision, resulting in images with flatter looks compared to that produced by standard lens. A 300mm lens is used by professional photographers with their SLR cameras. It is advisable to use 300mm lens with IS as it results in sharper images. A 300mm lens gives high quality images from edge to centre and works well from f/2.8 to f/8. The weight of the lens might obstruct in capturing images while it is hand-held. However, one can click images at 1/125 seconds when it is hand-held. This lens can be used for wide range of conditions. Some of these lenses have inbuilt filters. Moreover to make the lens handy, many manufacturers provide a case.
