4x5Large format is a term used in photography, referring to the largest film format used for high quality images. It involves use of large photographic films, cameras, and pinhole cameras, besides large digital sensors. The 4x5" is one of the most popular formats used for commercial work. The size of the sensor incorporated in the camera are 6 x 9 cm or larger. Some of the uncommon format for large format film includes quarter-plate, 11◊14 inches, 5◊7 inches, 20x24 inches and 16x20 inches. The series of less common formats also includes various panoramic or "banquet" formats such as 4x10 and 8x20 inches and metric formats such as 9x12 cm, 10x13 cm, and 13x18 cm. One of the most commonly used such large format cameras is the Polaroid 20 ◊ 24 inch instant cameras, which weighs almost 235 pound or 106 kg. To navigate various options on the camera and for a better control of depth of field and perspective, these cameras have changeable fonts and backs. Interestingly, the front and the back of any given large format camera can be treated individually ñ that is it can be shifted up, down or sideways without being parallel to each other. These movements allow the user to experiment with regards to the depth-of-field. It also enables the photographer to resolve all the impossible depth-of-field problems. Moreover, one can also create special effects using this camera and change perspective rendering, which is not achievable in a fixed plane camera. |
