Beatrix PotterBeatrix Potter, a renowned English children's book author and illustrator was well-known for creating the fiction character "Peter Rabbit". Potter was born in 1866 in a wealthy family at Kensington, London, and brought up by a succession of governesses. She grew up alone and had little opportunity to mix with other children. The only company which she shared were those of her pet animals, whom she began studying and sketching from an early age. This helped her in developing her talents at very early age. Although born into affluence, Potter was never afraid of getting her hands dirty. Her inquisitive nature encouraged her to study, write and paint most of her life. All these combined with her childhood solitude and love of nature are reflected in her literary works. The character, Peter Rabbit, her first fictional character, which was inspired from her favourite pet rabbit,, whom she accompanied wherever she went. Potter published her first story "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" in 1902, when she was 36. Published by Frederick Warne & Company, this small book as well as the subsequent books became very popular, earning her an independent income from the sales. All stories written by her were highly imaginative, which made for an engaging and thought-provoking reading for children of all ages. This was attributed to her keen observation of her pets and other animals she played with during her childhood days.
