Beswick Birds
Beswick pottery was started in the year 1894 by James Wright Beswick. Initially, the Company started making dinnerware, tableware and other ornaments. Based in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, the business of the Company was taken over by the descendants of James after his demise. Soon Beswick shifted its focus towards animal and bird modelling from the 1930s. The artists employed at the pottery would study animal and bird structures at science museums and aviaries to replicate the exact details in their creations. As a result, the Company became famous for making exquisite animal, and bird figurines. Beswick birds porcelain figurines were known for the realistic representation of real animals and birds and their expressions. The eyes and mouths of the figurines were hand painted.
Beswick birds animal figurines included cats, dogs, horses, bulls, cows and even wild animals. These animals were produced in various poses and colours. Some of these animals were also made in humorous positions like monkeys playing musical instruments and cats playing sports. Beswick birds figurines were quite popular and various species of birds were produced. From rare and exotic species to commonly found birds, a variety was created. Birds like owl, cocks, goldcrest, ducks, eagles, kingfisher, wagtail and many more were made by Beswick. These Beswick birds looked extremely realistic and were made with attention to details. The birds were beautifully painted and were made in different positions. Vintage Beswick birds are sought after by collectors across the world.
