About Wade

Wade is a British ceramic and earthenware company that has its origins with the Wade family who founded the business in Stoke on Trent in the 1800s. It still manufactures goods in the Midlands. Industrial ceramics Wade has never made tableware but always specialized in ceramics and earthenware pieces for industry. It still has this role as a major producer of earthenware for the international distilling industry, and of ceramics for the electrical industry. Whimsies It is famous for its "whimsies", tiny (one-inch high) solid porcelain figurines often animals owls, deer, pigs, hedgehogs or storybook character such as Humpty Dumpty or Alice in Wonderland. These were originally produced as promotional gifts for mass-market products such as Red Rose Tea in the US. These little creatures became so popular that they were sold separately in toy shops. Displayed in little matchbox sized packets, they were a very popular pocket money toy for children in the 70s and 80s. Today, there are thousands of collectors of these whimsical little creations. Their success prompted Wade to make other novelty ceramic products often as promotions for other companies. NatWest Pigs Wade also manufactured a range of bigger animal figures and curios, including the famous NatWest pigs. These ceramic piggy banks were part of a 1980s promotional campaign to encourage younger children to set up saving accounts, and were given away by the, then, National Westminster bank. There is a family of pigs: mum, dad, brother, sister and baby. Children were encouraged to save money regularly and collect them all.
