Manchester UnitedManchester United are a world renowned English football club based at the Old Trafford stadium in Trafford, Greater Manchester. It was formed in 1878 and was named Newton Heath LYR F.C. After almost succumbing to bankruptcy in 1902, the club was taken over by J H Davies who later renamed the club as Manchester United. Today, with a fan base of over 50 million supporters worldwide and more lining up just to get a ticket to see them play, it basks in the glory of being one of the most worshipped and most successful football clubs. It ranks second after Liverpool F.C. with respect to the most number of trophies won by an English Club. Manchester United possess a stellar winning record, winning the Premier Football League 15 times, FA Cup 11 times (which is a record that still stands in English football), the League Cup twice, the European Cup/UEFA Champions League twice, the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once, the Intercontinental Cup once and the European Super Cup once. It has the highest season attendance in English Football, having played in 34 seasons except in 1987-89 due to the reconstruction of their home stadium at Old Trafford. Among the European football clubs, Manchester United is the fourth one to reape in the most revenue. Manchester United is owned by Malcolm Glazer who made a hostile takeover of the club and delisted it from the stock exchange in May 2005 when the club’s value was just above 1 million pounds. The club’s present captain is Gary Neville, who replaced Roy Keane on 16 November 2005. |
