Amy WinehouseBorn on 14th September 1983, Amy Winehouse is a well-known singer and a songwriter. She is known for her English soul, jazz and R&B songs and was born in an English-Jewish family with a history of jazz musicians. Her songs depict the influence of artists like Nas, Mos Def, Teena Marie, Beastie Boys, Carole King, Mahalia Jackson, The Ronettes, The Shirelles, Sarah Vaughan, Minnie Ripperton, Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, The Specials, Toots and the Maytals and Thelonious Monk. Amy Winehouse’s "Frank" was her debut album, which was released on October 20, 2003 and was a huge success. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize and also for the BRIT Awards in the categories of "British Female Solo Artist" and "British Urban Act". Amy Winehouse has also won the Ivor Novello songwriting Award for "Best Contemporary Song" for writing the lyrics of her first single, "Stronger Than Me". Amy Winehouse’s demo tracks were released in early 2006, on Mark Ronson's New York radio show on East Village Radio. The tracks comprised two songs "Wake Up Alone" and "Rehab". They were a part of Amy Winehouse’s "Back to Black" album, which was her second album. This album hit the number one position on the UK charts and was released on October 30, 2006. It secured seventh place in the USA, becoming the highest debut for a British solo female. Amy Winehouse has performed many concerts and been on many tours. It is anticipated that she will perform at the Virgin Music Festival held in Baltimore, Maryland on 4th August, 2007. |
