Birmingham

Birmingham is a large city in West Midlands, England, with a total area of over 260 sq km. The total population was estimated to be over one million in the year 2005. Besides the majority Whites, others races like South Asians, Chinese, and Blacks live in this city. Known as ëBrummies,í the inhabitants of Birmingham speak using a distinctive accent and dialect. The football team of this city is extremely popular among soccer enthusiasts.

Thousands of years ago Birmingham was a small Anglo-Saxon farming village. Metalworking industries were set up in the twelfth century due to the easy availability of iron ore and coal. Birmingham was known for arms manufacturing at the time of the English Civil War of the seventeenth century. This city became an important industrial centre during the Industrial Revolution. A lot of restoration and rebuilding work had to be carried out after this city was bombed by the Nazis during World War II.

The city is situated on the Birmingham plateau which is about 150-200 metres above sea level. There are several places of interest in Birmingham that attract domestic and international tourists. The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery exhibits famous artworks to the public. There are several parks, squares, churches, mosques and malls in this city.
