CardiffProclaimed capital of Wales in 1955, Cardiff is one of the largest seaports in the world, and the tenth largest city in the United Kingdom. Situated near the Bristol Channel, Cardiff lies on the Welsh south coast. Until the beginning of the 19th Century, Cardiff was a small town and developed into a major port after the success of coal transportation led to flourishing business activities in the region. The wealth and growth of Cardiff increased exponentially after the industrial revolution. The Welsh economy is principally fuelled by the trade and commerce of its large capital. This exciting city has a rich history of culture and sports. Offering a wonderful combination of the ancient and the modern architecture, Cardiff shows off both Victorian and Edwardian architecture in all their glory. The history of this city dates back to the Roman conquest of Britain, and in fact the name supposedly means ’Fort of Didius,’ a powerful Roman general. There are two historic castles in the city one of which is a Norman castle. Latin and Norse have been the prominent languages since the medieval time, however, nowadays they have started speaking Welsh and English. Cardiff draws a plenty of domestic and international tourists as it offers plenty of historical monuments and structures, parks, festivals and other attractions. The Cardiff airport parking and Cardiff hotels are kept busy due to this phenomenon. |
