CheltenhamCheltenham is a famous borough and spa town in Gloucestershire, England. The town has a reputation of being quite wealthy and respectable. Since mineral springs were discovered there in 1716, the town of Cheltenham is known to be a health and holiday spa town. Renowned for its Regency architecture, Cheltenham has River Chelt flowing under it. The town is also popular for being residence to the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Cheltenham Town football club, the flagship race of British steeplechase horseracing and Cheltenham College. The borough of Cheltenham was fused with Charlton King’s urban district to lay the structure of the modern non-metropolitan district of Cheltenham. In 1991, parishes of Swindon, Leckhampton, Up Hatherley and Prestbury were added to region of Cheltenham from the borough of Tewkesbury. Cheltenham hosts literary, folk, music, science and jazz festivals every year. These events are held at places including The Playhouse Theatre, the Everyman Theatre, the Town Hall, Cheltenham Racecourse and the Pittville Pump Room among others. Well-known for horse racing, Cheltenham’s racecourse is located in the suburb village of Prestbury. The National Hunt horse race, Cheltenham Gold Cup, a grand event, is held around mid-March every year. Cheltenham is also popularly known for its aerospace, electronics, food processing and tourism industries. |
