NottinghamNottingham (a county town of Nottinghamshire) in the East Midlands of England owes its fame to the legend of Robin Hood who took refuge in the Sherwood Forest to band together some loyalists against the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham. Its fame was further cemented with the release of the Oscar nominated Hollywood blockbuster, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner released in 1991. Nottingham receives a considerable volume of tourists, attracted by its history, Nottingham’s nightlife and shops. Tourists love to visit Sherwood Forest, Nottingham Castle and The Tales of Robin Hood on Maid Marian Way. Other popular history-based tourist attractions include the City of Caves, Lace Market, The Galleries of Justice and the City’s ancient pubs. The centre of Nottingham lies on the River Leen and its southern boundary follows the course of the River Trent. The Council House, whose disproportionately tall dome can be seen for miles around, is at the top of the square. Inside the Council House is the Exchange Arcade, a shopping centre. Nottingham has one of the most sophisticated urban environments with a £200 million canal quarter, more cafÈ-bars, elegant restaurants, charming hotels than any comparable city, an enviable reputation for clubs, theatres, cinemas and galleries. Tourism ñ particularly from the US and the Far East ñ is becoming an increasingly significant part of the local economy. |
