PortsmouthWith an adventurous and war-ridden past going back to the times of the ancient Roman Empire, the city of Portsmouth was thought to have been created by a Norman nobleman, John of Gisors. Presently located on the coast of England in the county of Hampshire, Portsmouth is a bustling town and an active naval dockyard. Portsmouth is the most densely populated place in the UK, second only to the mainland London. Among tourists, Portsmouth had varied historical attractions such as the actual flagship of Henry the VIII, HMS Victory; the first iron-clad steamship, HMS Warrior, the Royal Naval Museum and the D-Day Museum. Some other places of attraction include the Blue Reef Aquarium, a sea-life display centre; the Cumberland House, a natural history museum; the Southsea Castle and The Royal Marines Museum. A modern tourist attraction is the Spinnaker Tower at the Gunwharf Quays that was finished in 2005. Portsmouth is also a famous education centre with the University of Portsmouth offering courses in both engineering and medical fields. The city is also known for its ornately carved cathedrals such as the Anglican cathedral of St Thomas and the Roman Catholic cathedral of St John the Evangelist. A number of noted writers like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells and Rudyard Kipling have had their roots in Portsmouth. With adequate hotel accommodation and a ferry transport system, Portsmouth is a decent vacation destination. |
