Barbie Dolls

Barbie is one of the most famous and loved fashion dolls the world over. Manufactured and marketed by American Toy Company Mattel, Inc., Barbie Dolls first appeared in 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler played a major role in creating and marketing the Barbie doll. While designing the doll, major inspiration was derived from a German doll known as "Bild Lilli" that she bought in 1956, while travelling to Europe. Since there was no adult doll in the American market this seemed to be a feasible idea ó and it did turn out to be so.

The Barbie dolls gave an opportunity to children to try different outfits and hairstyles on the doll. Along with various outfits and accessories, items like kitchen appliances, chairs, tables, recliners, vehicles, pets, etc., were also made available to make play more entertaining and interesting for children. The doll can also take up various professions like Miss Astronaut Barbie (1965), Doctor Barbie (1988) and Nascar Barbie (1998). Barbie’s full name is "Barbara Millicent Roberts". She also has a boyfriend named "Ken Carson". A number of changes have been made in the appearance of Barbie since it was first launched.
