Dolls HousesA dollhouse is a miniature version of a toy home. While primarily made for children, especially girls, today the variety and collections available have seen many adults drawn to these collectables. Though Dolls Houses may appeal to adults and children, their use with kids (especially under three years of age) may be restricted due to risks of choking. The history of dolls houses goes back to almost 400 years to the ’baby houses’ in Europe. These early miniature wonders were owned by rich patrons in the cities of England, Germany and Holland. The wealthy built cabinets with fine architectural details and housed them with miniature items for the house. They were trophy collections with fully-furnished household items and were sometimes almost as expensive as modest sized real homes. With time smaller dolls houses with realistic exteriors became popular in Europe. Today the small dollhouse industry is big with many brands, kits, types and ranges of accessories available. Different companies offer Dollhouse Kits, Dollhouse Furniture (specialty chairs), Dollhouse Accessories (complete line of interior and exterior lighting) and Supplies (glue, tools, materials), instructional books and videos to assist in the installation process. While early European dolls houses were handcrafted and unique, following the Industrial Revolution, factories began mass-producing toys, including dollhouses and miniatures. |
