About Game Boy

First launched in 1989, Nintendo's hugely popular Game Boy handheld consoles were produced up to 2008, resulting in a total of six generations of console before the development of the DS and 3DS. The original Game Boy consoles are the ones with a black and green LCD screen, an eight-way directional pad, two action buttons and two menu buttons. Games are played by inserting a cartridge in the back. The most popular and iconic of these original games was Tetris. Both the original console and games are now both popular and collectible, although good conditions are preferred. Later Game Boy models 9 years after the original console the first coloured screens became available, opening up a whole range of new games. It's worth knowing that one of the hallmarks of these consoles is their backwards compatibility, which means that almost every game developed for the original Game Boy will still work on the Game Boy Color. Marking a distinctive change in style and improvement in hardware the Game Boy Advance consoles launched in 2001 are still highly popular, and there is a huge library of popular games available, including the original Super Mario games. It's worth noting though that unlike some other consoles the screen is not backlit, which can make it a little harder to see the detail of the graphics in certain conditions. Backlit screens are available with either the Game Boy Advance SP or Game Boy Micro consoles. Although the screen of the Game Boy Micro is smaller than on the Advance SP, the resolution is actually the same which gives it much sharper graphics. It's also possible to find interchangeable faceplates for some models of Game Boy to help create a more individual look. Game Boy game cartridges The cartridges are usually known as Game Paks, and are available in various colours denoting their compatibility with different consoles. Always check compatibility before making a purchase, and be aware that game data, such as high scores, are often saved on the cartridge itself, not in the Game Boy, and so occasionally replacement batteries may be required for these.
