Mega DriveThe Sega Mega Drive is a console that was created by the Japanese company Sega Corporation; a video game, software and hardware manufacturer. The company launched the Sega Mega Drive video console in Japan in 1988. The console made its debut in North America in 1989 under the name Sega Genesis and in the PAL region in 1990. The console game received major success in North America and Europe as it was the first 16-bit console. Initially, the company had decided to call it the MK-1601, but later decided to go with the Sega Mega Drive name. Following the popularity of the Sega System 16, Hayao Nakayama, Sega's CEO decided to make use of a 16-bit architecture for their new home systems. The final design could be ported to the arcade and could be used in the Mega-Tech, Mega-Play and System-C arcade machines. Thus, any game made for the Mega Drive could be ported into these systems without any problem. In the European market, the Sega Mega Drive was released on November 30, 1990, where it received immense popularity. Different arcade classics like the Altered Beast, Golden Axe and Ghouls 'n Ghosts were launched by the company for the console. Later, Sonic the Hedgehog was launched for the Sega Mega Drive in June, 1991. The Mega Drive was discontinued in Europe in the year 1996. The Sega Mega Drive collection is a compilation of video games created for PlayStation 2 and PSP. This collection includes around 28 Sega Mega Drive classic games. |
