Sega Mega DriveSega Mega Drive is a 16-bit fourth-generation video game console first released in Europe on 30th November 1990. Touted and considered as a successor to the Sega Master System, the Sega Mega Drive was the first 16-bit console to garner significant market share in Europe. When launched, the Sega Mega Drive was priced at £189.99 in the British Isles, and was sold through retailers like Dixons, Comet, Toys "R" Us and Rumbelows. Sega stopped selling the Mega Drive in Europe in 1996. The Sega Mega Drive was powered by a primary 7.16 MHz Motorola 68000 processor, and also featured a secondary 3.55 MHz Zilog Z80 processor, which would act as a sound chip or was used as the main CPU in Master System compatibility mode. The Mega Drive also featured a dedicated VDP (Video Display Processor) for playfield and sprite control. The main sound chip in the Mega Drive was the Yamaha YM2612, which was augmented by a secondary sound chip, which was a Texas Instruments SN76489 compatible device built into VDP. There were also multiple add-ons available for the Sega Mega Drive like Sega Multi Tap, Sega Mega-CD, Sega 32X, etc. Some of the games in the Sega Mega Drive game library are 688 Attack Sub, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Sonic the Hedgehog, FIFA '98: Road to World Cup (the last "official’ game for the Mega Drive), Back to the Future 3, Batman, Batman Forever, Brian Lara Cricket 96, Combat Cars, Desert Strike, Dragon Ball Z, Duke Nukem, etc. |
