UMDUniversal Media Disc, also popularly known as UMD, is an optical disc created by Sony. This disc was developed by the Japanese electronics giant for their handheld game console, the Sony PlayStation Portable. This disc is used for storing various games, videos and even music. It can also be used to store movies and television shows. In UMD, the video is encoded using the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format. The audio is encoded using ATRAC3plus format. Universal Media Disc PSP is capable of storing data up to 1.8 gigabytes. This optical disc is 60 mm wide and 4 mm high and is sold in a plastic sleeve that protects the disc from getting scratched or damaged in any other way. Special UMD cases are also available that are designed in a way that the disc can be read without removing the case. The UMD provides a pixel resolution of 480x272 at 16:9 ratio and can display 16.77 million colours. Thus, UMD movies that are distributed via the Universal Media Disc format showcase clear and sharp picture quality. With a maximum capacity of 1.8GB, weight of 10g and dimension of 65mm (w) x 64mm (d) x 4.2mm (h), it is one of the most innovative and advanced products from Sony.
