Nail PolishNail polish, a coloured cosmetic lacquer, is used to paint the finger and toe nails. Also known as nail varnish, nail polish could be used for beauty purposes or for protecting the nails against damage. Nail paints are said to have come into existence because of Italians and the Japanese around 3000 B.C. A coloured lacquer, formed with a blend of egg whites, gum Arabic, beeswax and gelatine, was used by the Chinese people. This lacquer also had an occasional combination of orchid, mashed rose and impatien petals mixed with alum. This mixture resulted in a shade of red or pink colour when left on the nails for a few hours or overnight. In French manicures, nail polish that imitates the natural appearance of the nails is preferred. Here flesh tones are used on the nails and white is used on the tip. Nail polish is used to enhance the look of hands and feet as well as compliment the attire. In gothic and punk culture, black and dark coloured nail polish is used. Today in the mainstream fashion, women and occasionally even men can be seen wearing black and other dark colours of nail polish. Nail polish of different colours and shades are available on sale on many online shopping portals. |
