Power ToolsPower tools are tools that are powered by electric motors. Power tools may also be powered by a compressed air motor or a gasoline engine. Power tools may be stationary or portable. Stationary power tools are heavy and are well suited for heavy duty applications; however, these may be "moveable", and as such can be moved about either after de-assembly or as a whole. The term portable power tools usually refer to small hand-held tools. Power tools are widely used, and are often used in and around the house for cutting, shaping, drilling, sanding and painting, grinding and polishing. Power tools which are specifically designed for metal working are also referred to as "machine tools". Ordinary home-use power tools started appearing in the 1880s with the advent and improvisation of electric motors. Stationary power tools are generally sought after for their accuracy and increased power. For example, table-saw cuts faster and better than a hand saw. Also lathes yield objects which are extremely well-rounded and as such cannot be produced by any other means. Most stationary power tools and a majority of portable power tools are powered by electric motors. Portable electric power tools may be either corded or battery powered. Some of the major power tools manufacturers are DeWalt, Makita and Bosch. |
